December

During the fall and into winter, Willow took swimming lessons at the SDC. She passed the "preschool" class. They said she could take it again if we wanted to before moving her up to level 1, so we did that. So, she passed the preschool class twice. Here she is with her certificate. :) She really enjoyed swimming lessons, and I did too. Even though I'd have Seda, she'd usually fall asleep, and the 40 minutes or so that I spent sitting on the bleachers in that warm pool room was always the most relaxing 40 minutes of my week. I could even read a book if I wanted to!

Willow got into taking a sauna after swimming with some of the other girls, which got her into saunas. A true Yooper! She's tough too, and can stay in for a long time. Here she is in the sauna at Grandma and Grandpa's house.

After swimming ended, Willow started ski lessons! She started off with the 2-day "Christmas Ski School" at Mont Ripley. Her very first day, as I was getting her ready, a guy from the Gazette came and took our picture. We ended up on the front page:

Towards the end of the first day, getting the feel for it. We didn't really feel like she figured out how to snowplow those first two days. The third time she skied though....well, you'll have to wait for the January post to hear about that!

We also went cross country skiing once or twice in December. This was before she got into downhill though...it's yet to be seen if she'll still enjoy nordic now that she can rip it up on the slopes. She made it about halfway around the dog loop - much farther than she ever made it last year.

 

The whole family went, and Josh and I took turned holding Seda / staying at Willow's pace, and doing loops at our pace. It worked out OK.

Meanwhile, Seda spent December working on her crawling technique. She really got it down by the end of the month.

Here's a picture Linda took of Seda looking very proud holding her own bottle. I'm still going strong pumping twice a day at work, but I'm nowhere near the milk machine I was with Willow. The best part about pumping is that I share an office with Mariah who is on the same pumping schedule as me, so we just close our office door and put up a sign. No need to go down to the pumping room and lose all that productivity. I feel very fortunate, since I know that many women don't have such an ideal situation for pumping at work.

November

We kicked off November with my 35th birthday, which fell on a Sunday. The weather wasn't too cold, and we decided to go disc golfing. Mariah, Jarod and Mayona joined us at the course in Lake Linden. Everyone was having so much fun during the first 9 holes, we decided to keep playing. Well, we didn't make it to 18, but I think we made it to 14 before the babies started getting hungry and Willow started getting bored. I was pretty impressed that Willow played that long without whining. She really had a good time, and actually played each hole, for the most part. The birthday girl (me) is not in any of the photos we took, but here's some cute ones - of Willow, and of the two dads wearing the babies while disc golfing.

After disc golf, we all went to the Loading Zone and got a free birthday pizza. It was a good birthday.

One night, another awesome band -Breathe Owl Breathe - was playing at the Orpheum. We really wanted to go, and we were thinking about bringing the kids...but it started at, I think it was 7:30, and bedtime is normally 8-8:30ish. It was a weekend night though, and we decided to go for it. We knew that our friends Mark and Azure were going and bringing their 3 kids, so we figured we wouldn't be the only ones. I was more for it than Josh, who was being somewhat of a nay-sayer. Well, I'm happy to report that I was right - it was just fine. When we got there, we were a little apprehensive, because there was a line out the door to get in, and of course most of the people in line were college students. So yeah, it was pretty crowded, and there were not too many kids, but there were a few. Seda pretty much slept in the sling the whole time, and Willow did well until the very end, when she fell asleep too. But she didn't melt down or anything, just crashed in Josh's lap. So we thoroughly enjoyed the show, and when it was over, we said to ourselves, "We have to do this more often, and not let having kids stop us from going to shows". I got this one photo of Josh and Willow watching the show.

One warm-ish day, Emily and I and the kids walked to Chutes and Ladders. Emily took these nice photos on her phone. Thanks, Em! You can see in the background, they had already blocked off the "chutes" for the winter.

As far as milestones go, Seda became mobile in November. She started with an army-crawl, and would also do this cute thing where she'd be on her belly, and her feet would want to move...she'd keep moving her feet forward until her butt was up in the air, then she'd topple over sideways.

We went to Minnesota for Thanksgiving - the usual routine. We started in Hastings. Here are a couple photos from that leg of the trip.

The night we got into town, Willow and I went to bed, but Josh took Seda over to see GG at the rehab facility she was staying at at the time.

Seda also got to meet her new second-cousin, Isabelle. Here's Janna with both girls. (There seems to be a proliferation of baby girls in Josh's family lately! One of these times we should try to get a photo of them all together..!)

We did sneak in a quick visit (sushi lunch) with the Martell's and Lanners on the way fro Hastings over to Alexandria, though I didn't get any decent photos of that. We stayed at Scott and Lisa's for two nights and didn't have another Thanksgiving, but just hung out and visited with family. Willow had a grand time playing with Ellen, as usual, but for some reason I didn't get a photo of her with Ellen. I did get one of Seda and Nicholas though :)

I'll finish off this post with a few of my favorite random photos from November...

When Seda starts to get sleepy, her favorite thing is to suck her thumb with some sort of fabric in her fist, up against her face. She'll use a burp rag or a blankie, or my t-shirt (at night in bed) but her preferred thing to use is her sock.

More October

After the leaf post, I wanted to do a post of the rest of October, because we did do some fun things, and of course Halloween photos are always fun.

Mid-October, Sharon, Andy, Fritz and Josie the dog came to visit. A really awesome band - Cloud Cult - was playing here in Houghton at the Rozsa Center. We were super excited for the concert. My mom and Linda both helped with child care so we could go kid-less.

The concert was amazing. However I felt ashamed for my town and for Michigan Tech students, because there was hardly anyone there. We puzzled and puzzed over it and came up with theories ranging from not enough publicity to "Tech Students are lame and don't appreciate good music". Because this band is pretty big, and they sell out much larger venues than the Rozsa Center. Anyway, I'm glad we got to see it because, like I said, it was the best concert I've seen in years. I took a picture of the band (you can see all the empty chairs).

And of course, we had a great time watching the two babies together. Seda was just learning to sit up by herself at this point, and Fritz was cruising around on furniture. This was the best picture I got. We even took them out to eat at the Ambassador, which was moderately successful.

We also went on a hike in the Paavola Wetlands. It was actually cold and sort of rainy. But it was still good to get outside. You have to enjoy it when you can when you work a sedentary desk job five days a week.

 The weekend before Halloween, we went trick-or-treating in downtown Houghton for the "Treat Street" thing they put on. It was fun, and not as crowded as years past because they actually blocked off traffic, rather than trying to confine everyone to the sidewalks. Willow's favorite part was the haunted house at the police station. For weeks afterward, anytime we walked by the police station, Willow would ask if we could go in the haunted house.

 

On Halloween, we went trick-or-treating over in Grandma and Grandpa's new neighborhood. It wasn't quite the trick-or-treating mecca that east Hancock is, but it was still pretty good. The weather could've been better - it was raining - but we still had a good time.

Here are our jack-o-lanterns. Grandma made the kitty one, I made the scary one, and Willow drew the middle one and I carved it. The things on the sides of its mouth are bat wings.

Our awesome weather continued into early October in 2013. You can see that Willow has bare legs in some of these photos of fall leaf fun. I got so many great photos I decided to make a post with only leaf photos.

September

Here is a quick snapshot of what we did in the month of September. We had beautiful weather all month!


We gave Seda food for the first time. I think the first thing we tried was avocados. As I write this in September, she's tried avocados, sweet potatoes, rice cereal, applesauce, pears, and a few commercial baby foods. She doesn't eat a whole lot, but does like to play with her spoon while we eat dinner. She sits at the table with us in the high chair.

We did our last camping trip of the summer in early September. It was for my work picnic. We had the picnic at the Lake Linden campground pavillion, and then afterwards, a bunch of people, including us, stayed the night. It wasn't exactly a wilderness experience - we were the only tenters in what is basically an RV park - but it was fun anyway. Willow had a great time going around and around the little paved road on her bike with my coworker Dave's three boys. Here's Josh and Seda sitting around the campfire.

Teeth! Seda got her first two (the bottom front) teeth in September. The teething hasn't bothered her much, but she does drool a lot. Here she is with one of her favorite teething toys. I haven't had much luck trying to get a photo of the teeth, but they're darn cute.

One Sunday, we took a hike to our secret apple tree with my coworker Mariah and her husband Jerod and baby daughter Mayona. Here are me and Willow up in the tree knocking down apples. The tree caused some strife because Willow wanted to climb it the entire time, but we didn't really trust her to do it by herself quite yet, and we also wanted to chill on the grass and eat our picnic and drink beer rather than be constantly up the tree with her. The girl loves to climb...next year we have got to get her a monkeybar or something for our yard.

Here is Seda with her new friend, Mayona. Mayona was born August 22, so I guess in this photo she is about a month old or maybe even less - I can't remember the exact date we did this hike.

One night, Willow and I had a girls night out and went to the Calumet Theatre for "Seussical the Musical". It was a good show and Willow stayed entertained for the most part. I didn't get any pictures of us at the show, but here we are on the way out the door. We both wore our black tights and red ponchos. :)

One more thing, for the record: Seda had her 6-month appointment in September. She was 14 pounds, 4 ounces, which is the 11th percentile, and 25 inches long, which is the 9th percentile. Looking back at Willow's stats, it seems like Willow was about the same! So maybe Willow's small size wasn't so much related to her prematurity but more that we just have small children. :)

August

August was a fun month. I think. It's November now and I don't remember a whole lot. Hey, just trying to be honest. At least I am making an effort, however lame it may be, to document this year!

We didn't do a ton of hikes this summer. But this one that we did - it was up in Keweenaw County and ended up at the mouth of the Gratiot River, on the other side of the river from where you can get to by driving and where we have camped before -  was a new one we hadn't done before. It wasn't one from the book so we couldn't check any off that new-decade resolution we made, but it was a good one anyway. I read about it in a letter to the editor someone had written to the paper. I think it was because they were trying to get people to donate to a fund to buy this land to preserve it or something. I am not sure if they succeeded or not; we hiked a ways down a sandy trail only to find it was blocked off and had "no trespassing" signs up. We hiked back a ways and took the other fork, and that one was OK too. The trail was longer than we expected. Willow got whiny and we had to carry her too. It ended, as I said, at the mouth of the Gratiot River, where it meets the Lake. We hung out on the beach awhile and Willow went swimming. We had to sort of rush to get back though, because we wanted to go to the Co-op member picnic at McLain's. All in all, it was a trail we would do again. We'll just be more prepared next time with a lunch, swimming stuff, and more time! Here we are on the trail.

A big event of every August is the county fair. This year, by chance we met up with Scott, Sharon, Aspen, Garrison and Jari there, which was fun. Willow did all the rides as enthusiastically as usual, and a bonus was that this year, she was tall enough to ride the dragon "roller coaster". But the highlight was riding a real pony. She is still very into horses, ponies, unicorns, pegasuses (pegasi?)...anything equine. We bought her a cowgirl hat at the fair too. This isn't the best photo, but it was the best one we got of her on the pony.

We made a quick weekend trip to Duluth in August too. Josh's cousin had a wedding reception there. Mark, Amy and Ava happened to be camping in Bayfield that same weekend, at the same campground we went to in June. So we met up with them and camped there Friday night on the way to the  reception, which was Saturday. It was a blast, and went too quickly. I wish we could've camped with them for a week. Willow and Ava had a great time playing on the beach, and even went out on Mark and Amy's boat with Josh and Mark. Here is an especially cute picture of the two of them. Ava is exactly 2 years younger than Willow.

This is Seda's first time on a playground swing. I love this photo. Needless to say, she loved it!
